How many German engineers does it take to redesign an urban commute bike? Judging by the new Integrale bikes from Kalkhoff, our guess would be 'a lot.'
Kalkhoff has introduced two new bikes under the Integrale namesake, both of which showcase Kalkhoff's unique ability to couple their frame design and their proprietary mid-drive system into one impressive package.
The Integrale 8 incorporates all the same fundamental design innovations as the Integrale 11 with a few notable differences: The Integrale 8 is a Class 1 electric bike with a top assist speed of 20 mph, and it features an Alfine 8-speed drivetrain.
A new Impulse Evo drive motor system from Kalkhoff is more compact, quieter, and more powerful than it's predecessors. Also notable for 2016, the Integrale 8 features a side-loading downtube battery that clocks in at 612 watt-hours. The Integrale 8, by virtue of it's lower top speed, will see higher range predictions than the Integrale S11. A maximum range of around 90 miles is achievable when riding at lower assist levels. For urban commuting, forgoing a chain drivetrain has lots of advantages.
The Alfine 8-speed drivetrain on this bike, paired with the Gates carbon belt drive, is extremely low maintenance, quiet, and clean.
The console on the Integrale bikes is a huge step forward in terms of customization of the bike ride behavior, and also smart phone integration that includes turn-by-turn directions sent from your phone to the console on the bike. Motor settings that were previously only tuneable by our technicians are now easily changed via the console at any time.
Finally, the Integrale 8 incorporates plenty of urban accessories including an integrated rear rack and fenders, as well as high output lighting that runs off of the battery for maximum safety.
In summary, the Integrale 8 is a unique and qualified commuter from one of our most trusted brands. The new level of systems integration, smart phone connectivity, and extremely high quality components makes this bike a compelling offering for anyone looking for a way to powerfully engage an urban commute.
