  • Options Abound in 2018:  Xtracycle revamps their product line with a wide array of options never before offered on a longtail cargo bike.
  • The New 'Swoop' Frame: Xtracycle now offers a true step-through frame - the 'Swoop' - to make mounting your EdgeRunner even easier. If you prefer, the 'Classic' EdgeRunner frame is also available.
  • Hi-Torque or Hi-Speed? You Choose: Xtracycle now offers a choice between a Bosch hi-torque CX Drive motor and a Bosch Performance Line Speed motor.  If you're confronting the steepest hills, go hi-torque.  If you have a longer commute and need to get there faster, consider the speed motor.

  • Four Battery Options: Bosch makes two different capacity batteries - 400 Wh and 500 Wh.  Xtracycle now offers support for dual batteries.  Do the math and you get four combinations of single and double batteries - offering you between 400 and 1000 Wh of capacity. Choose more battery capacity for epic weekend adventures, longer commutes, or charging your cargo bike only once a week.

  • Front Thru-Axle Makes for Rigid Front End: A 15mm thru-axle securing the front wheel to the bike keeps the front end more rigid - an important thing on a heavily loaded electric cargo bike.
  • Chromoly Means Comfort: High-quality Chromoly steel construction is an Xtracycle standard, giving you a smooth ride without complex suspension elements.

  • Classic Accessories Improved for 2018: An overhauled cargo bag design facilitates configuration to your specific needs.  And a new center kickstand offers dramatically better functionality with added strength and stability.

  • Come Young, and Old: Quick attach two child seats for the youngins, and swap in seat pads when they grow up.  Carry two or even three kids depending on age and size.  A Hooptie passenger rail keeps kids who are too big for child seats safe and secure.
  • Carry the Goods, the Good Way: With the optional Porter Rack front tray and the new Porter Pack front cargo bag,  carry up to two bags equivalent of groceries or other cargo, up front!
  • Xtracycle Frame Sizes...Don't Be Fooled: In an effort to simplify their product line, Xtracycle has eliminated true frame 'sizes' and switched to using stems and seatposts to make their bikes fit bigger or smaller riders.  Check out Xtracycle's size chart here.  Know that we can help you size an Xtracycle to fit you, your spouse or both of you.
  • Sensible Cargo Components: Schwalbe Big Apple tires, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, Ergon comfort grips, reliable Shimano Deore drivetrain.
  • A Warranty You Can Trust: Xtracycle's warranty is backed by The New Wheel True Warranty™  and upheld by our professional service department. Includes 5-year frame coverage, 2 years for electronics, and 2 years for all other components (some exceptions apply).

Our Take

Xtracycle has been in the business of making long-bikes for two decades. The product has evolved from a bolt-on kit used for carrying kayaks and surfboards, to dedicated bikes used more often than not for urban adventures and family hauling.

The EdgeRunner is the culmination of an amazing history of innovation in American cargo biking and now sports a powerful and efficient electric motor system by Bosch. In the Bay Area, electric cargo biking is a true transportation solution.

The EdgeRunner innovated on longtail cargo bikes of the past by integrating a 20" rear wheel specifically designed to get cargo (especially passengers') weight as low as possible.  Amazingly, the ride only improved with the addition of the smaller wheel.  What's more, the lower rear platform increased safety of kids getting on and off.

High quality frame materials, great components, including high-end wheels, spokes and tires, are reasons why we love the EdgeRunner. Cargo bikes undergo significant wear and tear - there's literally zero benefit scrimping on budget components.

Overall weight of the fully equipped electric bike is around 70 lbs. For the cargo capacity of this bike (400 lbs) - the weight to cargo capacity ratio is simply unmatched. Now, with Bosch on board - get ready to skip the hassle of the car and get fit while you get stuff done.

New for 2018, the EdgeRunner becomes configurable - offering a 'classic' and a step-through 'Swoop' frameset, two motor options, 4 battery capacity configurations and a host of new accessory updates and changes.

Choose the high-torque Bosch CX Drive if you live in San Francisco and need to lug kids up steeper hills.  If you're sticking to flatter terrain or want to haul at higher speeds, the Bosch Performance Speed motor may suit you better.

Choose from 4 battery capacity configurations: 400 Wh, 500 Wh, 800 Wh or 1000 Wh using one or two Bosch batteries.  400 Wh is great if you recharge your battery daily and plan to go 20-40 miles per day with a load.  If you aim for lengthier commutes, and longer periods between charges, consider a higher battery capacity option.

Bags have been reinvented for 2018 with options for every kind of rider - cargo hauler or kid carrier and everything in between.  Bags are best seen in person, so we recommend you come see them in one of our stores.

Unchanged remains the useful Xtracycle PorterRack - a versatile cargo platform mounted to the front of the EdgeRunner frame. Add to this the ingenious PorterPack cargo bag and carry 2 large bags of groceries even with 2 or 3 kids (and gear) in the back.
