The second generation HSD has arrived, and our whole family—Ida, Karen, and Brett—is here to tell you about all the cool new things on this ultimate e-bike for the household: the latest Bosch system, upgraded carrying capacity, and spot-on spec choices, to name a few. So hit the play button below to ride with us as we talk Tern - and get some boba tea and dim sum along the way.

The HSD has been the goldilocks bike in the Tern family—in the middle between the value-oriented Quick Haul and the cargo-capacious GSD—and for that reason it's supremely popular. In fact, it's the number one selling model at The New Wheel.

But after the Quick Haul came out, we definitely saw that the HSD could use an update to nicely differentiate it. This second generation version not only sets itself apart with premium spec choices from belt-drive models to higher-speed Class 3 versions, but brings two key upgrades: the latest Bosch drive system and higher cargo capacity.

The new Bosch system has increased torque—now 75Nm versus 65Nm previously—giving smoother performance with the same quiet power delivery. The battery has also been upgraded to a larger 545Wh PowerPack, conveniently charged on the bike at the top-tube or off the bike. In addition, there are some really nifty software updates and a whole new app that allows you to track rides, adjust power settings, and more. On the "S" models—the S11 and S00—you even have built in GPS (an upgrade on the the "P" models) and a color display that offers turn-by-turn navigation.

The frame and rear rack have seen a significant upgrade that borrows a lot from the GSD in terms of stiffness and durability. The rear rack is now capable of hauling up to 180 lbs, and the reinforced frame and upgraded fork can manage that added weight capacity with aplomb.

But even with all the changes, the world of Tern accessories still plug into this bike, allowing you to make it yours and change and adapt the bike over time. Carry kids, adult passenger, pets, luggage, and groceries.

All in all, the second generation HSD is a huge upgrade and a big step for Tern. We have the HSD P5i and S11 ready to ride in San Francisco, Marin, and Oakland, so stop by, say hi, and take flight.
